More Enterprise Rescues on TV

2 June 2008: It seems there's always something interesting about enterprise on TV these days - the excellent 'Mary Queen of Shops' starring Mary Portas has just returned to our screens, and joins 'Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares' along with repeats of 'Dragons Den'. These programmes dole out 'tough love' to the troubled businesses they aim to rescue, and usually offer interesting, sometimes controversial viewing.

Anyone interested in business can just sit back, watch, maybe enjoy, and hopefully learn a few things from these programmes. For anyone unfortunate to have a fashion or restaurant business in real trouble, and brave enough to try for a very public fix in front of the whole nation on TV, there's always the chance to apply for some of that tough love. 24 April 2008: It was a great night for clients of HBV Enterprise last night. Congratulations to HBV client Maggie Hamand, Director of Maia Press, who picked up the award for 'Best Women's Business 2008.' Personal safety trainer Sev Necati added to her collection of awards with a 'highly commended' for 'Best Ethnic Minority Business 2008.' Email her at womensselfprotection@yahoo.co.uk. Energy saving specialist Joe Michaels of Joju was nominated in no less than 3 categories. Well done Joe! Last but not least, local hospitality, events and conference specialists City Edge were nominated for 'Best in the Business.'

All the award nominees gathered for a great evening at the Geffrye Museum, which included an upbeat reminder from the host, Mayor Jules Pipe, about how great a place Hackney is to do business in. Crime is down, we have a vibrant multicultural mix, we're finally getting much improved transport links, are right on the doorstep of the City of London (one of the biggest markets in the world) and there will be opportunities for business from the regeneration attached to the 2012 Olympics. HBV Enterprise will launch support services to help local businesses grasp some of these opportunities later in the year.

Dragons' Den invites applications from HBV clients and offers them top tips for success

27 March 2008: BBC's Dragons' Den has again asked HBV Enterprise to encourage investment-ready entrepreneurs to apply for a place in their new series. Their top tips for success in winning finance are:-

• The Unique Selling Point: A product that serves a need like nothing else.
• Scalability: Something that can be upscaled to make real money.
• Route to Market: The clear way the product can be sold and marketed.
• Mutually Beneficial Arrangement: What will the Investor get out of it?
• Exit Strategy: A plan of how the Investor will exit and make money.

HBV adds to 'Business Success Seminars' series

1 February 2008: HBV Enterprise has extended its successful seminar series by adding 'Successful Networking' and also a pilot networking event for existing owner/managers of local businesses on new business opportunities and how to win them. More here.

HBV Releases success data for 'New Entrepreneur Scholarships'

10 January 2008: The Learning and Skills Council today released details of the success of the New Entrepreneur Scholarships (NES) programme. Read more here. Locally, demand for the programme is often five times the number of support places available; a success in itself, although disappointing for candidates whose applications are not successful.

HBV Enterprise has been managing the programme locally since 2002, during which over 250 budding entrepreneurs have won places and enrolled. Over 100 of them have started up in business and received grants totalling £250,000 - a real boost to our local economy! Read more on NES support from HBV Enterprise here.
